Catherine & Nathan’s Vintage Rose Barn Wedding

Some wedding days are elegant. Some are wildly fun. Some are deeply sentimental. And every once in a while, you get one that manages to be all three.

Catherine and Nathan’s wedding at Vintage Rose Barn was exactly that. This wedding was filmed and photographed in gorgeous October sunshine. Catherine managed to rock an enormous cathedral-length train for most of the day (no small feat, since that's quite a bit of fabric!) and we were able to cross the street and play in the alfalfa field for golden hour. There were so many pretty things to photograph. But what I loved most, was how surrendered they were to the moment. So much of the day unfolded in a way that felt completely right to them, and they didn't worry about formalities or expecations. Witness a quiet, meaningful ceremony with their families prayerfully surrounding them, followed by a reception where everyone celebrated on the dance floor.

Golden Hour at Vintage Rose Barn

I’ve photographed weddings at Vintage Rose Barn before, but this was the first time I was able to take a couple across the street into the neighboring field for golden hour. It was worth the wait. This field is incredible for photos! There’s a huge open skyline, and there’s beautiful light in just about every direction.

And then there was Catherine’s dress. That cathedral-length train and cathedral-length veil... oh when the wind caught them in the evening light, there was endless golden glow. It was one of those days where you look at the back of the camera and think, Oh. Yes. This is why photographers love October. Glorious!

The Secret to the Perfect Cathedral-Length Veil Motion

One thing to keep in mind with a giant wedding dress train in an open field: you can't exactly do a standard twirl.

If you try to do a full spin in a cathedral-length gown and veil in tall grass (or an alfalfa field), you're probably going to end up tangled in your own dress.

So instead, I taught Catherine and Nathan a miniature version of a twirl, which is essentially a dramatic dress fling. And it looks amazing in both film and photos.

Nathan holds Catherine's hand up, Catherine rotates her body while holding the dress in her other hand, and they keep their eyes on each other as they turn. It creates that feeling of movement without requiring anyone to actually perform an Olympic-level maneuver in a field.

That run-through-the-field though? That was ALL THEM! I honestly wasn't sure it could be done, but they made it look both joyful and effortless. Fabulous skill!

See it in Motion!

Highlight videos take weeks to craft to perfection, but in the meantime, enjoy 30 seconds of lovely random scenes while I storyboard the main film.

A sweet family moment

The ceremony was one of the most intentional parts of the entire day. Catherine and Nathan brought their pastor up from Indiana, where they live, and during the ceremony they created a quiet moment for their family to surround them and pray. I complimented the officiant on the sweetness of the ceremony after the gathering and she told me that Catherine and Nathan planned it all on their own! It was exactly everything they wanted, including the processional music featuring a perfect recording of Catherine singing "I Get to Love You" played by DJ Mark Graham of Magnum DJ Service

And the Party Came Alive!

Speaking of DJ Mark... This guy has so many tricks up his sleeve! From Karaoke (with multiple live mics) to his own personal version of the "Snowball Dance", he can keep your guests on the dance floor all night long, which gave Haley time to finish up her live painting from the day!

We meant to do an end-of-the-night chandelier-in-the-dark photo. Truly, we did! But wedding dresses are heavy, suits are stiff, and dancing is fun. Plus, Catherine and Nathan had THE CUTEST matching sweats to show off. So, rather than the classic Vintage Rose chandelier photo, we opted for fun in front of the mirror!

And instead of a traditional sparkler exit, Catherine and Nathan's guests lined the walkway with glowing foam sticks and waved them as the couple came through.
